The primary stage unit is a metal-edge type cleanable filter to remove the heavier particles from the fuel. The secondary stage has a replaceable element capable of removing practically all of the fine abrasives which pass through the first stage. The final stage filter is a sealed and non-cleanable unit located immediately before the injection pump and capable of removing particles of 2 microns. Clogging or excessive deposits of contaminants on filter elements causes insufficient fuel flow and necessitates periodic replacement. Generally, the flow is restricted too much when a vacuum of 10″ or more is present on the suction side of the pump.  A tee fitting is provided on the pump inlet for insertion of a vacuum gauge to check the efficiency of the filters . Clean the primary filter if the reading is too high. I f the reading is still too high, replace the element in the secondary filter. If the reading does not come down, the final stage filter must be replaced. If the primary and secondary filters are properly maintained and doing their job, it should not be necessary to replace the final stage filter for a long time .
