The FIAT engines fitted to 780 tractors and the OM engines fitted to 880 tractors are high-speed, four stroke, in-line Diesel units. Engine Block – Single iron casting, wet liners on OM engines and dry linners on FIAT engines, incorporating crankshaft and camshaft housings and valve tappet bores. Cylinder Head – Integral valve seats. Valve Gear – Helical train, pushrod operated, camshaft, overhead valves. Crank Gear – Crankshaft running on five bearings, light alloy pistons with one compression and two oil control rings on FIAT units and two compression and two oil control rings on OM units. A flyweight-type dynamic balancer in the engine sump reduces engine and engine-induced vibrations. Air Breathing – Through oil-bath air cleaner. Fuel System – Distributor-type injection pump and three-orifice injectors on 780 tractors and four-orifice injectors on 880 tractors. Lubrication System – Forced feed, gear pump, full-flow oil filter and relief valve. Cooling System – Water, centrifugal pump, wax thermostat.
